When did you start working at the Chateau?
I took on the role of head of production in November 2004, when Chateau Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac became part of Dourthe Vineyards.
I had just finished studying oenology at ENITA and Bordeaux’s winemaking faculty. As part of my course, I also completed work-based experience as a technician at Chateau Pey La Tour.
Tell us something about the Chateau
The vineyard comprises a single block of sandy-clay soils spanning 15 hectares and planted essentially with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It’s classic refined and elegant Saint-Emilion.
What is the highlight of the vineyard year for you?
Pruning. This is the time of the year when we create the new vintage, vine by vine. We have time on our side, and we listen to the vineyard. We can see how it reacts and what it has to offer.
Which, in your opinion, is the greatest vintage produced in recent years?
I don’t really have a favourite vintage, but if I had to choose one, it would be 2008. It was at this point that I began to master the potential of terroir.
If you had a single memory to share with us relating to life on the estate, what would it be?
I’ve been on the estate on a daily basis for ten years now. I don’t have a special memory in particular, but what I can say is that during my time here I have experienced the full gamut of emotions from the most acutely stressful to the dizzy heights of euphoria.
