Château La Garance

AOC Graves

Packshot Bouteille - Château la Garance - site

In 1986, Alain Thiénot bought this property in Graves around the same time as Château Rahoul, a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. When he was about to release the first vintages, he named the property after his daughter Garance.

Since 1988, the property has formed an integral part of Château Rahoul and benefits from the same ambitious policy undertaken in these vineyards by Alain Thiénot. For Château La Garance, the objective is simple: to provide a good introduction to the Great Wine of Château Rahoul and to reveal exactly to what extent the diversity of the property’s terroirs is an advantage to creating fine Graves wines.

Vinification & Ageing

Temperature controlled stainless-steel vats, of various capacities, adapted to a plot by plot wine making.

Small vats (52 Hl) for vinification of small and very qualitative plots.

The vintage

At Château Rahoul, the first buds appeared around 10 April, which is fairly normal for this sandy, gravel soil. The first few hot and sunny weeks of spring stimulated the growth of vegetation and a very even flowering took place in these ideal conditions. Such good weather throughout the season meant that the vines were in excellent health. The rate at which the vines were growing began to slow a little in July, and veraison of the red varieties didn’t happen until the beginning of August on the gravel parcels of the vineyard, which are more sensitive to lower volumes of rainfall.

We took full advantage of such a healthy vineyard and some fantastic weather conditions by harvesting the red grapes over the course of three weeks, allowing detailed plot by plot management, allowing each parcel to ripen fully without any pressure to pick earlier.

Tasting notes

Château La Garance 2015 : «  Ruby colour, brillant eand limpid. Le nez présente des notes aromatiques de petits fruits rouges, de framboise. En bouche, rondeur et souplesse accompagnent une jolie trame tannique. La dégustation s’achève sur une finale savoureuse portée par une note délicatement épicée. » (mai 2017)

F. Bonnaffous – Directeur  Vignobles Dourthe

Blend

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon

The vintage

After a promising start to the year, a dull, gloomy summer meant ripening got off to a slow start. Any worries were lifted towards the end of August with the arrival of exceptional, lasting weather conditions. While the quality of the vintage owes a great deal to the excellent late-season, a vintage of this quality would not be possible without considerable work in the vineyards earlier in the season to ensure pristine quality in the vines and stunning fruit. Summer finally set in August 27th lasting right through until the end of October, kickstarting ripening once again in Château Rahoul’s predominant Merlot, and creating optimum conditions to progress the Cabernets. Pre and post soaking in the lovely red grapes revealed the full potential of the aromas and silky, ripe tannins.

Tasting notes

Appealing bright ruby red in colour. The bouquet exudes notes of fresh red fruit, lifted with a slight smokiness typical of these Graves soils. Fruit lingers on the well-balanced palate, which softens on the attractive, lengthy finish

Blend

1% Petit Verdot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 75% Merlot

The vintage

With a vintage with such changeable weather conditions as 2013, constantly adapting and remaining vigilant was of the essence. Continually monitoring disease pressure in the vineyard, a profound understanding of the vineyard, painstaking canopy management to tame extremely vigorous growth and severe harvest selection proved central to the success of this complicated vintage.

The reds, regrettably in limited quantities, are supple and aromatic, and have benefited from new sorting equipment, which optimises the removal of stalk matter before a final sorting by hand on tables.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby red in appearance. The wine opens on the bouquet with chocolate notes, and a hint of smoky character typical of these Graves soils. Rounded and fleshy on the palate, this full-flavoured wine culminates in an appealing finish.

Blend

85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot

The vintage

The vineyard, which is relatively old and deeply rooted, escaped significant precipitation in spring. Excellent weather in August and September allowed the grapes to reach good ripeness levels, and we approached Dourthe’s 6th harvest on the estate in a total state of calm. The Merlot cultivated on sandy-gravel soils, is soft and aromatic. We decided to extract and vinify at low temperature this year, to retain the typical fruit and elegance of domain red wines.

Tasting notes

Lovely ruby colour. The nose offers explosive fresh, red fruit aromas of strawberries, combined with a hint of smoky character. Good volume on the wonderfully balanced palate, with savoury notes and richness underpinned by rounded tannins.

Blend

85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot

The vintage

The vineyard is located on a sandy-gravely and clay-gravel terroir, typical of the Graves appellation. The vines are managed with meticulous care. Technics are adapted to the unusual weather conditions of the vintage, essentially to compensate for the persistent drought in the run up to the summer and excess humidity prior to the harvest. This extreme vigilance has been rewarded with grapes ripening normally. The red grapes were harvested from 14th September to 3rd October. The healthy, consistent grapes are the result of exceptional work in the vineyard.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby in appearance. The mature bouquet interweaves red fruit aromas with notes of vanilla oak. The wine is direct and fresh on the attack, supported by fine tannins. On the palate, it develops lovely depth and roundness, while on the finish the wine is backed by subtle, well-integrated oak character.

Blend

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
