Vintage

The first six months of the 2016 grape season turned out to be particularly rainy and warm, replenishing water reserves in the soils which would serve the vines well in forthcoming months. Which was just as well as sunshine set in for the long haul from mid-June, bringing very dry weather until the end of the harvest. The combined effect of available water supplies and favourable temperatures – not too excessive during the day and very cool at night – played an important role in developing the fruit and their aromas during ripening.
Under the influence of the relatively cool nights at the end of August and beginning of September, the majority varietal Sauvignon blanc, and Semillon, gained good aromatic potential which has improved during fermentation and ageing.

Tasting notes

The 2016 vintage once again reveals the originality of the terroir producing this Chateau La Garde white. Light and long on the bouquet, where dominant Sauvignon Blanc on limestone offer minerality and intense citrus fruit aromas, together with a hint of smoke. The mineral character is echoed on the palate, where great poise and length counterweight the great aromatic intensity, freshness and rich character from the supporting, entirely complementary Semillon grown on the gravel plateau. Freshness defines the 2016 vintage of this harmonious, fragrant wine.

Vintage

The year began with excellent climatic conditions – light, heat and dry weather. The very even flowering began a week earlier than the average start date recorded at La Garde. The white grape varieties did not struggle with a spate of hot, dry weather of June and July. The vineyard was in excellent health and the rainy periods, intense though not excessively heavy, at the end of July and beginning of August, kickstarted veraison which had been slowed by the high temperatures of previous weeks. With the chilly nights and warm days, particularly favourable for the white grape varieties, conditions in August were ideal. We picked the Sauvignons and Semillons on 5 separate sweeps from 1 - 10 September, working early in the morning in order to preserve freshness.

Tasting notes

Lovely floral and mineral expression on the bouquet with a hint of citrus fruit. The sappy, linear palate reveals all the purity and freshness typical of La Garde Sauvignon. The delicately toasty finish reflects perfectly integrated barrel ageing,

Vintage

The advance in vine development during the first part of the year was soon offset by a dull, cool summer, resulting at the end of August in a worrying delay in ripening.  We remained constantly on alert, tailoring work in the vineyard to the vagaries of the vintage, with rigorous leaf-plucking to improve airflow around the bunches and exposure to sunlight, thinning out after veraison to prevent over-cropping and any non-uniform bunches, removing any bunches and shoots derived from secondary buds, and keeping ploughing and grassing over to a minimum in order to limit water supplies to the vine and facilitate ripening. The magnificent Indian summer allayed our fears, and evened out any delays in ripeness noted at veraison, The whites, which do not cope well with hot summers, have thrived in the relatively cool temperatures of July and August.

Tasting notes

Clear and bright in appearance, fresh on the bouquet offering aromas of flowers and flint. Poised and lively on the palate. Long and lingering on the finish with elegant fruit notes, this wonderfully mineral wine expresses the trademark purity of Chateau la Garde Sauvignon blanc.

This wine, which is dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, is from a small plot in the vineyard of La Garde. It is wood aged, giving spice as well as ripe, smooth fruit. There is a young herbal edge that will certainly soften as it ages. This is an aromatic crisp wine that will be ready to drink from 2021.

The 2014 La Garde Blanc is turning into a fine Pessac-Léognan. It has a detailed bouquet with orange pith, white peach and fresh pear aromas that are neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, lively orange zest, tangerine and mandarin notes with excellent weight and focus on the finish. This is a delicious white Bordeaux that is perfect to drink now, so why wait?

This Bordeaux white wine blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Semillon grapes is crisp and fresh, an exemplar of the limestone soils in which it grows. Racy acidity provides a wonderful back-drop for fresh seafood and shellfish. Finishes with lemongrass.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Interesting estate owned by Dourthe, with recent investments starting to pay off. As with many of the 2014 whites, this has lovely definition and lift, with a much-needed addition of stone fruits and apricots care of a touch of Sauvignon Gris. Majority is Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. This has gorgeous salinity, even touches of smoky granite.

Intensely herbaceous, this is a crisp wine that shines in fresh fruit notes. It has a bright acidity, with forward citrus and grapefruit flavors. The texture is light and fruity.

Fresh and tangy with lots of minerals and dried lemon peel. Full-bodied, direct and racy. Shows excellent potential.

Vintage

Vine vigour and water supplies in the different plots were successfully kept under control through rigorous ploughing, and frequent, targeted canopy management to optimise ripeness levels. Adopting a sustainable approach for many years and a profound understanding of the estate’s different terroirs, have made it possible to confront challenges in the vineyard throughout the season - including rain and exceptionally low temperatures during flowering and storms and hail in summer – and to achieve a good harvest despite a difficult vintage. The whites stood up well to the aggressive weather, reaping the benefits of a cool vintage. Harvesting began late, on September 19th, which was a first at Château La Garde.

Tasting notes

Very clear and tinged with green in appearance, while the expressive, typically Sauvignon bouquet, combines citrus fruit aromas and elegant mineral character. The same fruity aromas typify the wine on the palate, enveloped in rich, waxy character that follows all the way through to the very long, fresh finish.

Vintage

This vintage really kept us waiting! Fine weather in August and September fortuitously reduced the significant delay at the start of the summer, but still required drastic selection in both the reds and whites, resulting in a significant reduction in volumes at la Garde.

The white grapes, which were slightly later-ripening than in average years, were harvested over 6 half days, with a very precise division between the different blocks and our legendary plot of Sauvignons was split up into 5 distinctive areas. The Semillon save impressive results, the first year of harvest.

Tasting notes

With abundant freshness, the expressive bouquet initially reveals lovely citrus notes, complemented by a floral touch from the Semillon, making its first appearance in the blend. The wine is direct on the attack, taught on the palate with very subtle oak character, and offers the purity of Sauvignon Blanc cultivated at La Garde. Fresh and well-balanced on the finish.

This CVBG-owned white deserves to be better known, as it is improving with almost every vintage. It's a very aromatic blend, with smoky, pithy, struck match and pink grapefruit notes and a long, lip-smacking finish. The oak is very well integrated here, giving the wine a creamy undertone.

A vibrant, gorgeous white with lovely flavours and concentration. Lifted gooseberries, mangosteen and star fruit with sweet, pear finish. Beautifully made. This year it was 95% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Semillon.

Vintage

The white varietals, deeply rooted in the clay soils, with the help of meticulous work in the vineyard over the past years, handled the vintage’s extreme variations in water availability particularly well. With late pruning, we were able to slow down ripening and from August 26th to September 2nd we harvested 4 different batches of balanced and characteristic Sauvignons.

Tasting notes

Complex aromas of citrus. Fresh on the palate, lively and mineral. Discreet ageing, slightly emphasized at the end by a hint of vanilla.
