Château Pey La Tour - Bordeaux Rouge

AOC Bordeaux

Packshot - Chateau Pey La Tour Rouge - site

Dourthe acquired the vineyard in 1990, committed to exploiting this high quality vineyard and producing a fruity, well-balanced and elegant, terroir-driven wine. For more than 25 years, a completely “reassessed” viticultural regime has been applied to the entire vineyard, in the utmost respect for the terroir and vines in a bid to obtain optimum fruit quality. Planted essentially with Merlot (90%), and complemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the wine displays a lovely garnet colour, with predominant red fruit aromas on the bouquet. Chateau Pey La Tour unquestionably reveals all the qualities of a fine Bordeaux wine with abundant harmony even in youth.

The vintage

After a cool winter, bud burst came early, with the first sign of green emerging 31 March. Even growth was followed at the end of May by flowering amid favourable weather conditions. The favourable early beginnings continued with a hot and dry summer, facilitating healthy conditions in the vineyard throughout the year. In this mature vineyard, the vines are well-established on clay-limestone soils, and did not suffer from lack of water during the first half of summer. After the rain at the start of August, veraison went well. The grapes were in pristine condition, and we started harvesting in ideal conditions, almost 10 days ahead of schedule, spreading the harvest over 3 weeks to allow the latest ripening grapes to reach perfect maturity.

Tasting notes

Deep garnet in appearance. The complex bouquet develops aromas of fresh ripe fruits. Round and pleasing from first sip, the wine is full-bodied on the palate. Elegant and fresh in equal measure, delivering spicy, fruity notes and lovely, savoury length.

5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 90% Merlot

The vintage

After a promising start to the year, a dull, gloomy summer meant ripening got off to a slow start. Any worries were lifted towards the end of August with the arrival of exceptional, lasting weather conditions. While the quality of the vintage owes a great deal to the excellent late-season, a vintage of this quality would not be possible without considerable work in the vineyards earlier in the season to ensure pristine quality in the vines and stunning fruit. The Indian summer set in for the long haul in early September, creating optimum conditions for the predominant Merlot to ripen under its own steam, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Harvesting began October 2nd and remained entirely stress-free, coming to a close October 23rd in ideal weather conditions, creating fruit character, concentration and balance in the different parcels.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby red in colour, red berry fruits with strawberry notes are unleashed on the lovely bouquet. Fleshy and supple on the attack, the wine develops attractive roundness on the finish, complemented by the fruit purity of this delicious Pey La Tour.

The vintage

Impeded by cold weather, flowering was late to start at Pey la Tour, while rain at the end of June caused coulure and millerandage in the widely planted Merlot, which in turn would impact upon harvest volumes. The hot, dry summer saw delayed ripening, but in good conditions. Through excellent management of the vineyard, in terms of controlling disease pressure, vigour and eliminating unevenly ripe grapes prior to harvesting, conditions stabilised in September. The harvest began October 2nd , since changeable weather wreaked havoc with our intake planning. Nevertheless, the vines remained healthy and by modifying our schedules on a daily basis, we were able to harvest healthy grapes.

Tasting notes

Lovely concentrated ruby-red in colour. Aromas of black fruits define the fresh bouquet. The wine is quite complex on the palate, pleasantly fruity and full, revealing supple, appealing structure showing some length. A lovely, well-balanced wine.

The vintage

After a relatively cool spring, July and August were extremely kind, with abundant sunshine and ideal temperatures. The effect of continued lack of water was tempered by Pey la Tour’s clay terroir, and by ploughing the soil to keep evaporation to a minimum. Significantly cool nights in the run-up to harvesting gave the vines chance to recuperate, while promoting good aromatic and phenolic ripeness in the fruit. Cooler temperatures also helped preserve the natural acidity in the grapes. The intensely juicy and aromatic berries have created remarkably fresh must and the wine’s impressive balance emphasizes the “crunchiness” of the juicy fruit.

Tasting notes

Very dark in appearance with bright tinges. The intense bouquet reveals abundantly fresh fruit notes of small red fruits, blackcurrants and blackberries. The silky, generous and fruity palate is enhanced by incredible balance. The wine is long, fresh and aromatic on the finish. Chateau Pey la Tour 2010 is a truly delicious wine.

Always a name to look out for in the search for «reliable inexpensive « Bordeaux. The blend here is 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc. Subdued nose, definitely needs some time, but carafing/giving it breathing space in glass should be all you need.
