Château de Ricaud - Loupiac

AOC Loupiac

Packshot Bouteille Château de Ricaud - loupiac - site

Often quoted as the gold standard in sweet wines since 1897, Loupiac is more than capable of standing its ground compared to its illustrious neighbours in Sauternes. Alain Thiénot fell under the wine’s charm on tasting the 1929 vintage, and bought the property in 1980. Château de Ricaud Loupiac focuses on aromatic intensity, with a floral rather than sweet character, and lively and fresh on the palate. It has made its name as a benchmark in Loupiac and it is not without good reason that it has been referred to by a number of journalists as the “Yquem of the Right bank”.

The vintage

The first half of the year was blessed with excellent conditions, with the first signs of flowering emerging 29 May, slightly earlier than average. Hot and dry weather lasting just over seven weeks from mid-June to the end of July, blocked growth in the youngest vines. We meticulously adapted canopy management techniques to minimise the effects of water stress, and the vineyard coped well as a result. A spate of moderate rainfall in the middle of summer proved sufficient for veraison to get underway across the entire vineyard. The grapes swelled and favourable weather at the beginning of autumn facilitated excellent ripening.
The “noble rot” developped harmoniously due to very good weather conditions in September. The berries were hand-picked, in two sortings, during the first decade of October.

Tasting notes

Attractive golden hue. Lovely freshness on the intense bouquet and laden with peach and citrus fruit aromas. The aromas are mirrored seamlessly on the palate, where they combine with lovely mature noble rot character offering typical apricot and orange rind notes. With beautifully balanced acidity and rich sweetness, the wine culminates in a lingering, aromatic and fresh finish.

The vintage

After a promising start to the year, a dull, gloomy summer meant ripening got off to a slow start. Any worries were lifted towards the end of August with the arrival of exceptional, lasting weather conditions. While the quality of the vintage owes a great deal to the excellent late-season, a vintage of this quality would not be possible without considerable work in the vineyards earlier in the season to ensure pristine quality in the vines and stunning fruit. Super weather set in at the end of August. The Semillon thrived in this great weather. Noble rot advanced at a regular pace, and the grapes were picked in three tries staggered over three weeks to ensure lovely botrytised fruit. A superb vintage for Loupiac.

Tasting notes

Stunning gold in colour and characterised on the nose by aromas of citrus fruit and white peach. Lovely attack on the palate. The citrus fruit aromas sharpen and intensify to offer orange peel notes lifted with a hint of vanilla from fermentation in new barriques. The acidity balances well with the sweetness. Long fresh finish.

The vintage

On Ricaud’s clay-limestone soils, the vine has found its natural balance, despite fluctuating water supplies, as a result of 2013’s changeable and often extreme weather conditions, which offered little respite in the vineyard. Sémillon, which yield has been dramatically lowered by the challenging weather conditions during flowering, was given particularly accurate care, in order to ensure the best possible ripening. September allowed a good development of Noble Rot, and we harvested from September 27 onwards, in 4 rather severe tries, perfectly botrytised bunches.

The vintage

Painstaking remodelling of the vineyards at Ricaud, undertaken by the Dourthe teams in 2008, paid off in this complex vintage. Vines planted on high quality, predominantly clay-limestone terroirs, coped well, despite significant variations in water levels. The ideal weather conditions from the month of August onwards, allowing a good development of the Noble Rot, raised our hopes for a really great vintage.
We harvested in three manual sortings, mid-October.

Tasting notes

Clear and bright in appearance, with lovely hints of gold. Floral notes of acacia intermingle with candied citrus fruit on the bouquet, while the savoury palate offers good depth of flavour and is delicately perfumed. It is perfectly balanced and develops freshness and verve on the finish.

Guide Hachette

The vintage

The 2010 vintage offered ideal conditions for fruit ripening, with good sunshine, high but not excessive temperatures and cool nights, which promoted good sugar concentration in the berries, while retaining the necessary acidity level to create good balance in the sweet wines.

The grapes were picked in several sweeps through the vineyard over the course of October, harvesting only the berries the most affected by noble rot.

Tasting notes

With its beautiful golden hue, this wine offers aromas of pineapple and fruit jelly. Full and flesh on the palate, its effuses aromas of white peach and preserved lemons, evolving into hints of fig. Overall the wine is beautiful balanced.

Joli fruité, très loupiac, équilibré, assez fluide, finale consistante avec le sens du terroir. On apprécie l'effort d'élevage.
