Vintage

At Château Rahoul, the first buds appeared around 10 April, which is fairly normal for this sandy, gravel soil. The first few hot and sunny weeks of spring stimulated the growth of vegetation and a very even flowering took place in these ideal conditions. Such good weather throughout the season meant that the vines were in excellent health. The rate at which the vines were growing began to slow a little in July, and veraison of the red varieties didn’t happen until the beginning of August on the gravel parcels of the vineyard, which are more sensitive to lower volumes of rainfall. We took full advantage of such a healthy vineyard and some fantastic weather conditions by harvesting the red grapes over the course of three weeks, allowing detailed plot by plot management, allowing each parcel to ripen fully without any pressure to pick earlier.

Vintage

After a promising start to the year, a dull, gloomy summer meant ripening got off to a slow start.  Any worries were lifted towards the end of August with the arrival of exceptional, lasting weather conditions.

While the quality of the vintage owes a great deal to the excellent late-season, a vintage of this quality would not be possible without considerable work in the vineyards earlier in the season to ensure pristine quality in the vines and stunning fruit. Summer finally set in August 27th lasting right through until the end of October, kickstarting ripening once again in Château Rahoul’s predominant Merlot, and creating optimum conditions to progress the Cabernets. Pre and post soaking in the lovely red grapes revealed the full potential of the aromas and silky, ripe tannins.

Tasting notes

Attractive intense colour. Perfumed and complex on the nose, bursting with liquorice and blackberries and a delicately toasty dimension.  The generous palate is expressed through round, silky tannins and lovely freshness which underpins the balanced texture through to the long, savoury finish.

Rich round fruit on the nose, spicy plum, gourmet touches of oak, fairly super-charged impact on the attack, the oak is vanilla bean clove and cappucino, with tannins that are chewy and front-of-mouth. Ambition on display, helped by fresh acidity and minerality, will need a few years, and will suit those who prefer a more contemporary gourmet feel.

Vintage

With a vintage with such changeable weather conditions as 2013, constantly adapting and remaining vigilant was of the essence. Continually monitoring disease pressure in the vineyard, a profound understanding of the vineyard, painstaking canopy management to tame extremely vigorous growth and severe harvest selection proved central to the success of this complicated vintage. The reds, regrettably in limited quantities, are supple and aromatic, and have benefited from new sorting equipment, which optimises the removal of stalk matter before a final sorting by hand on tables.

Tasting notes

Deep in colour and tinged with garnet. Fruity aromas, enhanced by smoky nuances typical of these gravel soils, are echoed on the generous palate, with its full tannic structure. Good balance lasts through to the lovely finish.

The Château Rahoul is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has classic, tertiary bouquet that is mild mannered and does not want to create a fuss. Vintage

The vineyard at Rahoul, which is relatively old and deeply rooted, escaped significant precipitation in spring. Excellent weather in August and September allowed the grapes to reach good ripeness levels, and we approached Dourthe’s 5th harvest on the estate in a total state of calm. The Merlot cultivated on sandy-gravel soils, is soft and aromatic. We decided to extract and vinify at low temperature this year, to retain the typical fruit and elegance of Chateau Rahoul red wines.

Tasting notes

The generous bouquet reveals crunchy, fresh, red fruit aromas and fine, delicately smoked oak. The wine is supple and round on the attack. The unctuous tannins impart good volume on the palate, and well-balanced structure. The relatively long, savoury, fresh finish expresses the elegance of the Rahoul terroir.

Vintage

The Château Rahoul vineyards are situated on a sandy- gravely and clay-gravel terroir, typical of the Graves appellation. The vines are managed with meticulous care. Technics were adapted to the unusual weather conditions of the vintage, essentially to compensate for the persistent drought in the run up to the summer and excess humidity prior to the harvest. This extreme vigilance has been rewarded with grapes ripening normally. The red grapes were harvested from 14th September to 3rd October. The healthy, consistent grapes are the result of exceptional work in the vineyard.

Tasting notes

Pronounced ruby-red in appearance. Ripe bouquet where red fruit notes intermingle with vanilla, oaky aromas. Direct and fresh on the attack, underpinned by fine tannins. The wine develops good concentration and rounded character on the palate. A wine of great finesse, supported on the finish by subtle, well- integrated oaky character.

Vintage

Mother Nature and the climate were very good to us in 2010. Recorded precipitation levels, that can be compared to 2005 or even 2009, resulted in the production of small berries from the very outset. The result is a natural concentration of tannins, anthocyans, sugars and acidity. Fine weather and generous sunshine in summer limited the breakdown of natural acids in the grapes, and ensured excellent alcohol, concentration and acidity ratios, which is indispensable in achieving perfect balance in the fine wine. The older Merlots display a magnificent colour. The Cabernet and Petit Verdot, which benefited from a fabulous late autumn, are simply glorious!

Tasting notes

Deep, concentrated crimson in appearance with purple tinges. The nose is intensely fruity, revealing ripe, red fruit aromas of cassis, blueberry and blackberry, the sign of great fruit ripeness. Direct and fresh on the attack, backed by delicate, silky tannins, the wine is wonderfully sweet on the mid-palate, adding weight and roundness. The well-integrated oak character on the finish contributes to the finesse of this elegant and well-balanced wine.

Vintage

Despite episodes of hail, the vintage has certainly not disappointed. After the hail of May 12th, which severely affected the parcels around the Château, thanks to an exceptional summer with extremely high temperatures and sunshine hours and an idyllic autumn, the grapes reached levels of ripeness rarely equalled. With extremely fruit-laden juices, the grapes are showing signs of concentration on every level, with relatively high alcohol levels being the only shortfall, given the impressive ripeness

Tasting notes

Concentrated, deep garnet in colour, red and black fruit aromas of generously ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and redcurrant dominate the bouquet. Initially soft on the palate, the wine develops impressively harmonious tannins and alcohol. The tannins are delicate and create a wine with abundant charm.
