The vintage

From time to time a vintage comes along that makes you really smile. 2015 seems set to be one of these !

In 2015, Nature was a definite ally. Successful flowering got us off to a great start. Very dry weather at the start of summer may at times have been some cause for concern, but from early August, kind, indeed weather in our favour, promoted perfect ripening in the grapes and delivered excellent quality. Harvesting and vinifications ran smoothly, calmly and pressure-free, and there is absolutely no doubt that our cellars harbour a number of gems…

Tasting notes

Incredibly deep and concentrated in appearance and tinged with crimson. Intense and complex on the bouquet, redolent of ripe, fresh black berry fruits, combined to perfection with spicy notes. Very smooth and full-flavoured on the palate from the outset, the aromas evolve swiftly, gaining remarkable breadth and intensity. Impressively full-bodied, concentrated and silky, the lengthy structure, enveloped in lingering aromas of black cherry and blackcurrant, together with delicate notes of sweet spice, extends all the more to culminate in a finish of rare distinction and length.

A very great wine with exceptional balance, finesse and length.

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

The vintage

Some vintages truly hit all the right notes and 2010 is one such.

After a difficult spring, weather in summer right through to the end of the season was remarkable. Sunshine almost every day and perfect temperatures, good night/day temperature variations, and slowly ripening grapes all played a part in promoting freshness, complex aromas and great phenolic ripeness, all contained in perfect harmony.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the 2010 vintage ranks alongside exceptional Bordeaux vintages.

Tasting notes

Incredibly deep and concentrated in appearance and tinged with purple. Intensity reigns on the complex bouquet, where aromas of ripe fruits meld with delicate, sweet, spicy notes.

This is an impressive wine, initially supple on the palate, yet swiftly gaining in richness and power. The appealing aromatic intensity is underpinned by delicate, silky tannins, while the accompanying freshness supports the wine as it evolves, only to culminate in an exceptionally long finish.

Refined, powerful and well-balanced, Essence de Dourthe 2010 is a resounding success for this stunning vintage.

- 98/100

I'm running out of superlatives for this wine: it's a blockbuster with everything, complexity, depth, length and finesse. It's actually made from a blend of grapes in various Bordeaux regions that are not usually blended together. The strategy is to showcase the very best of what each Bordeaux terroir can product such as Merlot from St Emilion, Cabernet Sauvignon from Medoc and so on. Think of it as a Super Tuscan that's Bordeaux bred. This is why you won't see a appellation designation on the bottle: it rises above them all to become something in and of itself.
- 95/100

Bright, high-toned 2010 with blackberries, blueberries and dark stones. Full body, polished and rich tannins and a polished and velvety texture. Lots of fruit yet always reserved. This needs four or five years still.

The vintage

In 2009, Nature was exceptionally generous providing a long, sunny summer extending into the autumn, which amply rewarded our efforts and patience and resulted in an exceptional vintage, one of the finest in the history of Bordeaux.

Tasting notes

Highly attractive, intense colour. Powerful on the nose, the wine exudes intense ripe, fresh fruit aromas of black cherries, which blend seamlessly with notes of spice, liquorice and mint. Soft, long and full on the palate, underpinned by refined tannins. The aromatic and refreshing fleshy character coats the well-balanced structure, before the long, delicately spiced finish. The richness and complexity of Essence 2009, at this stage of the wine’s development, would benefit from airing for two hours before drinking.

Wet earth and brambleberry aromas with hints of walnuts and Chinese tea. Full-bodied, tannic and powerful. Layers of fruit. Needs at least six to seven years to open.

Tasting notes

This intensely dark wine is distinguished by its deep, bright colour. The powerful nose exudes a complex bouquet of fresh red fruit, intermingled with vanilla, sandalwood and black pepper notes. The wine is full on the palate, revealing fine-grained tannins and impressive, unctuous character. The ripe fruit is enhanced by attractive freshness and a spicy, delicately oaked finish. Tasting this harmonious blend - remarkable for its power, delicate quality and purity - is extended by its long finish, full of potential, indicating a very great wine.

A very aromatic red with dark berry and plum character and wet earth and stones. Full to medium body, linear tannins and a fresh finish. Tight and racy.

Les Echos
Le vin brille par son magnifique grain de texture, une chair soyeuse et gourmande. La finale, qui ne manque ni de nerf, ni de fraîcheur, impressionne par sa persistance. A garder sagement en cave comme un grand cru.
Wine Advocate
- 90/100

This is a branded wine produced from the very best lots that the Dourthe firm owns, which includes some well-known château such as le Boscq in St.-Estèphe, La Garde in Pessac-Léognan, Belgrave in the Medoc, and Grand Barrail in St.-Emilion. Only 500 cases are made and the 2008 is a beauty. Dense purple, with loads of black currant fruit intermixed with hints of coffee bean, tobacco, leaf and licorice, the wine is medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with sweet tannin. Even though this is a branded negociant wine, it is at the highest level of quality and should age nicely for at least a decade.

Tasting notes

The wine is deep in colour and extremely bright. Its complex bouquet is characterised by intense aromatic freshness, and red and black fruit aromas intermingle with delicate, spicy notes, underpinned with enchanting fragrances of cocoa and vanilla. On the palate, the wine is impressively full and the silky texture of its powerful body delights as it caresses the tongue, revealing remarkable balance and purity. Through carefully controlled ageing, the seductive fruit character revels in its true glory and is a fine complement to this harmonious blend, with its lingering finish indicating its huge potential.

Powerful, elegant and delicate, Essence de Dourthe 2006 boasts the nobility of only the finest wines.

Aromas of spices, balsamic vinegar and hot stones. Full-bodied, tangy and rich with decadence but style.

Tasting notes

The wine’s dense appearance reveals glints of dark purple. Intensity and finesse characterise the complex nose, as it reveals exemplary aromatic freshness and emanates powerful ripe-fruit fragrances of red cherries, Burlat cherries and blackcurrant, intermingled with delicate nuances of cedar and toasted cocoa beans. On the palate, the fullness and weight of the wine is impressive, and then its surprising velvet texture is soon unveiled. It is a delicate wine, silky even, revealing incredible balance, freshness and purity. As the palate develops, it is supported by extremely good acidity, which delivers an exceptionally long finish. Majestic and refined, Essence de Dourthe 2005 is a magnificent wine from an unparalleled vintage.

Gorgeous aromas of chocolate, currants and blueberries. Cedar and tobacco undertones. Violets, too. Full body, super-integrated tannins and a silky and caressing finish. Firm and polished. Very textured.

- 16.5/20
- 89 - 91/100

This lower pedigree wine represents undeniable quality/value rapport in 2005. This vintage is so deep in quality among the better run, less heralded estates, that these wines should appeal to reders looking for terrific values from Bordeaux. Most of these wines are Merlot-based and will be drinkable young. Sleeper of the vintage.
