Merlot on Clay-Limestone
Ripe-ish fruits on the bouquet reminiscent of Morello cherries and blackberries, accompanied by spicy notes. Full and expansive on the palate, where the acidity and sweetness are in perfect harmony. Very long on the finish, with silky tannins. This is the most complete wine in the collection.
2020 is an early, demanding vintage, which afforded the teams little respite. This was a year defined by nerve-racking disease pressure and contrasting weather. Winter was mild and wet, fully replenishing water reserves in the soils, and followed by a particularly hot spring with plentiful rainfall. The conditions promoted vine growth, and coaxed budburst and flowering to arrive ten to fifteen days in advance, varying from parcel to parcel. The dry summer and lack of water set in later this year, and was also cooler than the norm. From mid-July onwards, the heat triggered perfect maturation in the grapes, while lack of water carries the promise of great complexity and generous tannins. This vintage is defined by the 10-day precociousness, small berries, high quality, tannic juices and terrific aromatic freshness.

Black olives, rich dark cherries and some black-chocolate stones on the nose. Broad, structured and vertical on the palate with fleshy fruit, creamy tapenade and plenty of dusty tannins. Long and driven. Drink or hold.

The third wine in this line-up, this is Merlot from soils of clay and limestone, and this seems to have given it a more confident, forward and focused nose, with a little confit cherry fruit dusted with black pepper and barrel spice. A much more complete style on the palate here than found in the first two cuvées, the darkly spiced fruits swirled with liquorice and tar, but with fine structure and a sense of freshness. Charming, but dense and confident. Certainly the most ‘complete’ wine in the Mosaic sextet so far, and the first of two components which form the bulk of the La Garde blend.
