Merlot on Clay
This wine presents an impressive range of aromas, leaning in particular towards complex, dark fruits. A flavoursome blend of Morello cherries and smoky, peppery notes. The tannins are chiselled and very noticeable. This is a powerful, distinguished wine with impressive length. As a grape it adds body to the blend and is therefore an important component.
2020 is an early, demanding vintage, which afforded the teams little respite. This was a year defined by nerve-racking disease pressure and contrasting weather. Winter was mild and wet, fully replenishing water reserves in the soils, and followed by a particularly hot spring with plentiful rainfall. The conditions promoted vine growth, and coaxed budburst and flowering to arrive ten to fifteen days in advance, varying from parcel to parcel. The dry summer and lack of water set in later this year, and was also cooler than the norm. From mid-July onwards, the heat triggered perfect maturation in the grapes, while lack of water carries the promise of great complexity and generous tannins. This vintage is defined by the 10-day precociousness, small berries, high quality, tannic juices and terrific aromatic freshness.

Expressive blue fruit with cassis, tapenade, iodine, blue flowers and iron. Round and fleshy on the palate with medium to full body and a mouthful of silky, chocolatey tannins. Smooth, with a caressing finish. Delicious now, but will hold, too.

This is Merlot from clay, and it shows, the nose wading in with darker multilayered fruits, beginning with black cherry, building up to notes of liquorice and tar. This is clearly more brooding and intense, and this translates onto the palate, which feels more solid and textured, with a powdery tannic grip. Broad and lightly silky, despite its density the midpalate is freshened by a minerally, gravelly edge. This feels superior. This will certainly improve with some cellar time.
