Merlot on Limestone
Aromas of white flowers, lilac, jasmine and wild thyme combine with mineral-laden notes. Supple, crisp and fresh on the palate, the wine offers evident, unctuous, powdery tannins which linger persistently on the palate. A distinctive, linear wine with bags of class.
2020 is an early, demanding vintage, which afforded the teams little respite. This was a year defined by nerve-racking disease pressure and contrasting weather. Winter was mild and wet, fully replenishing water reserves in the soils, and followed by a particularly hot spring with plentiful rainfall. The conditions promoted vine growth, and coaxed budburst and flowering to arrive ten to fifteen days in advance, varying from parcel to parcel. The dry summer and lack of water set in later this year, and was also cooler than the norm. From mid-July onwards, the heat triggered perfect maturation in the grapes, while lack of water carries the promise of great complexity and generous tannins. This vintage is defined by the 10-day precociousness, small berries, high quality, tannic juices and terrific aromatic freshness.

The last of four cuvées featuring Merlot, here the vines are planted on limestone-rich soils. Bright and demonstrating more precision on the nose than its peers, this nevertheless still presents the dark and concentrated fruit which reflect the character of the 2020 vintage, with black cherry and currant, infused with powdered limestone. The same precise, powdery and smoky character persists onto the palate, which feels bright and long. Undoubtedly showing the most precision of these four Merlots.
